John Sherman: Pentagon’s CIO Office to Take Over 5G-Related Efforts by FY24
John Sherman, chief information officer of the Department of Defense and a 2023 Wash100 awardee, said his office will assume responsibilities for all 5G-related initiatives within DOD starting Oct. 1, and has been working with the office of the undersecretary of defense for research and engineering to facilitate the transition, Breaking Defense reported Thursday.
Sherman said the CIO office will look at broadening 5G pilot programs to more installations with a focus on open radio access network pilots.
All Plaintiff Experts Barred in Cell Phone Brain Tumor Lawsuits
In a big win for the telecoms, and Motorola in particular, a judge has disallowed testimony from the entire slate of expert witnesses who were scheduled to support claims that cell phones can lead to brain tumors.
Judge Alfred Irving Jr. of the Washington DC Superior Court issued the ruling on April 25 in a set of 13 cases collectively known as Murray v Motorola.
The Murray litigation has been going on for a long, long time —think Jarndyce. The original claim was filed more than 20 years ago. In November 2001, Mayer Morganroth and his son Jeffrey Morganroth sued Motorola on behalf of Michael Murray, a 34-year-old technician who had developed a malignant glioma after testing cell phones for Motorola (details in MWN, N/D01).
The FCC Is Supposed to Protect the Environment. It Doesn’t.
The agency is mandated to safeguard the environment from damage caused by communication infrastructure. But when companies want to add new cell phone towers, build on protected land or launch satellites, the agency typically does little or nothing.
In a mountainous forest in southwest Puerto Rico, workers cleared a patch to make room for a 120-foot cellphone tower intended for use by AT&T and T-Mobile. The site, as the tower company later acknowledged, destroyed some of the nesting habitat of the Puerto Rican nightjar, a tiny endangered songbird. Fewer than 2,000 are believed to be alive today.
Sheffield and Great Barrington voters approve hold on 5G applications
Berkshire County, MA – At the Sheffield and Great Barrington annual town meetings May 1st, 2023 residents voted in favor of the citizen’s petition Article 32 which requires the town to hold applications for 5G installations until the “FCC completes the DC Circuit court-mandated Environmental Review of the entire 800,000 to 1 million wireless telecommunication facilities roll out to the conditions as stated in the NEPA Policy Act 1969 including studies from scientists independent from industry, who have fully investigated millimeter wave 5G small cell technology safety; and that the FCC regulations have been updated to include measures that comply with the results of this review.”
Citing scientific evidence of biological harm from wireless radiation, an eleven-thousand page document
was submitted as part of a legal case filed against the FCC by the Environmental Health Trust, the environmental health organization led by Dr. Devra Davis, a member of the team awarded the Nobel Peace Prize as a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change scientists.
Recent Case of Severe Microwave Syndrome Reveals Problems With 5G
After a 5G base station was installed within 60 meters of her second-floor apartment, a middle-aged, otherwise healthy, a Swedish woman developed debilitating symptoms corresponding with radiofrequency/microwave syndrome, researchers at the Environment and Cancer Research Foundation (ECRF) in Sweden reported last month.
This was the third such case documented by the researchers.
According to their case study, published in Annals of Clinical and Medical Case Reports, fifth-generation (5G) wireless technology is being rolled out worldwide, “despite no previous research on possible negative effects on human health and the environment.”
EMF/RF/5G Cell Towers at Schools? Massachusetts Town Meeting Votes, For or Against Safety
In a tale of more than two cities, voters in Massachusetts face dramatically different choices at their town meetings in early May.
As noted by MA4Safetechnology, there are protective Town Meeting warrant articles before voters regarding 5G, FCC guidelines, and wireless exposures in Millis, Sheffield, Great Barrington, Upton, and Chester,
The citizen-initiated warrants in the five towns all draw attention the fact that the Federal Communications Commision has failed to respond to the court ruling in 2021 that its decision not re-assess its 1996 exposure guidelines is “not evidence based.”
A scientific study notices increase in brain tumors in South Korea and correlates it with cell phone use
An epidemiological study has recently been carried out by researcher Jinyoung Moon*, with the aim of establishing a potential correlation between the exposure of the population to radiation emitted by mobile phones and the observed increase in certain types of brain tumors in South Korea. The results, published in early March 2023 in Environmental Research journal, confirm the international trend seen in other countries such as France, with a fourfold increase in 30 years in glioblastomas (the most serious cancers of the brain).
In order to estimate the impact of mobile phones in the occurrence of brain tumors, the South Korean scientist relied on the national mobile phone subscription rate, used as an approximation for the exposure assessment to electromagnetic waves. The researcher thus analyzed the incidence of certain tumors, both benign and malignant, by brain region and for the entire population of South Korea.
F.C.C. says 5G megatowers need ‘historic preservation’ review
After weeks of prodding by Congressmember Jerrold Nadler, the Federal Communications Commission recently wrote to CityBridge, the private consortium the city has contracted with to install 2,000 of the 32-foot-tall towers. About one-third of the sci-fi-looking structures are slated to be erected in 13 “equity districts” around the city, including the East Village and Lower East Side.
But there has been pushback from various parts, especially from areas including historic districts, such as Greenwich Village, where nine of the towers are initially planned and where earlier this year Community Board 2 called for a moratorium on the new infrastructure’s rollout. Parts of Brooklyn have seen opposition, as well.
Fact: Ambient Levels of Wireless Radiation Are Increasing From New Wireless Network and 5G, 4G Densification
In 2021, a landmark court decision was issued by the U.S. Appeals Court, DC Circuit (EHT et al v. the FCC) determining that the FCC had “completely failed” to address the “substantive evidence of potential environmental harms.” The evidence included scientific evidence on wireless radiation impacts to birds, bees, trees and plants.
The wireless industry statements that a small cell emits less than a large cell tower is technically correct but a misleading half truth. Generally speaking, a person living in a neighborhood where small cell networks are deployed on every block will likely have an increased ambient exposure, compared to the exposure before the small cell deployment.
EU Commission hand-picked expert report authors known for bias towards telecom business needs
Today two European NGO:s, specialized on the health risks from radiofrequency radiation (RFR) emitted by modern wireless technology, published an in-depth critical review of the latest EU Commission expert group report on RFR.
The EU expert report is heavily biased and appears to be predetermined to dismiss health risks below the ICNIRP limits of maximum exposure to RFR. By doing so, the EU report greenlights the adoption of the ICNIRP 2020 exposure limits that allow RFR at levels shown to cause harmful effects, but are favorable to the telecommunications industry.
Amazon Invites Developers to Test Its Creepy Wireless/IoT Network Now Covering 90% of U.S. Households; “holds promise” for Smart City Tech
Over the years, countless experts have warned about privacy and cybersecurity risks with all “smart”, wireless and/or Internet of Things (IoT) technology. While Amazon may not be the only company guilty of collecting private data with their devices on people of all ages without their consent, earlier this month the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced the agency will be taking legal action against it for this and maybe other offenses as well.
Nevertheless, the company now also seems to be offering developers the opportunity to collect data on people without their consent.
5G smartphones: this is why users’ health is not guaranteed!
We have already pointed out on many occasions that the SAR (specific absorption rate) does not in any case offer sufficient protection and that its standards, both European and international, have allowed the mobile telephony industry to overexpose all mobile phone users for 30 years, prioritizing patient sensitivity to public health.
However, the National Frequency Agency (ANFR), far from questioning the use of this indicator, intends to maintain confusion by adding two additional ones: the IPD (Incident Power Density) and the APD (Absorbed Power Density).
New Research from Fiber Broadband Association and Vantage Point Solutions Reveals Fiber Is Essential To Close the Digital Divide
WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Fiber Broadband Association and Vantage Point Solutions today announced a white paper that answers the question, “Can Unlicensed Wireless Solve the Rural Digital Divide?” The research reveals that the limitations of unlicensed wireless are too great to be worthy of investment from public funds, such as the NTIA’s Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, and therefore cannot effectively close the digital equity gap. The paper concludes that fiber remains the most future-proof of all broadband technologies.
“The BEAD program is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to close the U.S. broadband gap. In order to keep it closed, broadband providers need to ensure they are deploying highly-reliable networks that have fast speeds and are scalable and sustainable long-term,” said John George, chair of Fiber Broadband Association’s Technology Committee and Senior Director of Solutions Engineering and Fusion Splicers at OFS. “Making the wrong technology choice now will require even more investment sooner than expected in order to meet increasing customer demands and will likely doom many to be on the wrong side of the digital divide forever.”
Former FCC Attorney: How the FCC Fails to Follow Environmental Laws and Fails the Public
Erica Rosenberg, formerly Assistant Chief of the Competition and Infrastructure Policy Division at the Federal Communications Commission states the FCC has failed to protect the environment and the public. Since leaving the FCC, she has documented numerous ways that the FCC has failed to fulfill its mandatory duties related to environmental review regarding telecommunications infrastructure deployment. Watch EHT’s interview with Erica Rosenberg.
Her article entitled Environmental Procedures at the FCC: A Case Study in Corporate Capture published in the journal Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development. Read her blog post below about the FCC has failed to protect the public.
Attn. FCC: Causing Disability is Discrimination. FCC “Preventing Digital Discrimination” Reply Comment Deadline: April 20
We need an updated definition of digital discrimination to account for “when FCC regulations enable the imposition of wireless infrastructure that causes disability.”
The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) is seeking public comment about “digital discrimination.” Please add your voice.
FCC 22-98, Implementing the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act: Prevention and Elimination of Digital Discrimination states,
“Today we take the next step in our efforts to promote equal access to broadband for all people of the United States by seeking comment on potential rules to address digital discrimination of access to broadband internet access service. Equal access to high-quality, affordable broadband internet service is critical for everyone living in the Nation, as we increasingly rely on broadband for work and education, healthcare and entertainment, and to stay connected with friends and family.”
How the Body Reacts to EMFs and Smart Meters: We Can Now See How We Are Breaking Our Hearts (and Heads) and We Can Stop
The European Environment Agency has compiled several volumes of case studies of early warnings “covering a diverse range of chemical and technological innovations and highlighting a number of systemic problems. The ‘Late Lessons Project’ illustrates how damaging and costly the misuse or neglect of the precautionary principle can be, using case studies and a synthesis of the lessons to be learned and applied to maximizing innovations whilst minimizing harms.”
Several of the recommendations are pertinent to the opportunity that exists now, to re-evaluate smart metering and other wireless technologies, especially as they pertain to “sustainability:”
List of cell phones withdrawn or updated for deception and endangering users
In a press release dated April 4, 2023, the National Frequency Agency (ANFR) announced that the SAR measurement tests of the Essentiel Clap 20+ mobile phone model did not respect the regulatory limits for the trunk (2 .73 W/kg instead of 2W/kg) and limbs (4.14W/kg instead of 4W/kg).
For the moment, it has not been possible to access the test reports carried out in the laboratory. Indeed, the entire SAR test database is not accessible. As a reminder, it was following our actions before the Administrative Court that the agency finally had to make public in 2018 the hundreds of test reports kept secret since 2012.
How one California couple beat the future at their doorstep: a 5G cell site
Moira Hahn and Mark Hotchkiss live in a small grayish ranch house in Long Beach, California.
It could easily be mistaken for others in the neighborhood if it weren’t for the front yard. It’s unusually lush; filled with bushes, palms, and a giant Australian pine tree.
There’s also this big metal pole — a street light more than 30 feet tall — right between the sidewalk and the street. It’s been there since Mark and Moira moved in over 20 years ago. They never thought about it much.
Then, in 2021, they received a letter from a company they had never heard of. It looked like junk mail, so it sat on the kitchen table for a couple of days unopened.
Apple warning tells millions how far to keep iPhone from chest – it’s never worth risk and further than you think
APPLE users with medical devices have been warned to keep their consumer-electronic products at a safe distance.
Most consumer-electronic devices – like the iPhone 14 – are made with magnets or components that emit electromagnetic fields.
In turn, this can interfere with certain medical devices “under certain conditions,” Apple said in a blog post.
“For example, implanted pacemakers and defibrillators might contain sensors that respond to magnets and radios when in close contact,” Apple writes.
Scientist says T-Mobile cell equipment on top of Wyandotte school is a health danger
WYANDOTTE, Mich. (FOX 2) – Families and elected leaders in Wyandotte marched the streets to protest the 5G cell equipment on an elementary school property on Friday.
They are hoping T-Mobile will get the message. While the cell provider, and some government agencies say the radiation won’t harm kids and teachers, one scientist says the parents are justified in their concerns.
While the topic has seemingly divided Wyandotte, it’s not the only community fighting this battle with similar reports from Connecticut to Pennsylvania to Virginia.
Through the streets of Wyandotte, frustrated parents, their kids, and school board members demanded T-Mobile remove its 5G equipment from a tower on Washington Elementary’s property.
“We’re not against 5G, we’re not against technology, we’re not against any of that,” said parent Kim Castmore. “We are against it being on top of our school on our children.”
5G Cell Tower Nixed from Resident’s Property
Moira Hahn and Mark Hotchkiss have finally achieved their long-sought victory: Confirmation has been received from both AT&T and the City of Long Beach that the cell tower construction permit for a right-of-way 25 feet from their home, at the edge of their property line, will not be issued.
Moira and Mark’s struggle has received extensive coverage in local TV and print media. For a brief video on their plight, see 5gaware.com/the-hahns-story.
Last October, Moira and Mark’s appeal under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) came before the Long Beach City Council, resulting in a 3-3 tie vote. The deputy city attorney on hand at the moment referred to this as a victory for AT&T; however, that interpretation of a City Council tie vote under CEQA was strongly disputed by Moira and Mark’s attorney Doug Carstens of Carstens, Black & Minteer.

Our Opportunity to Regulate Smart Meters in NY is Now
Since 2013, there have been at least 5 attempts to pass smart meter regulation in New York state, but none have advanced beyond committee discussion, and none would have offered sufficient protection to the public. However, NY senate member Pete Harckham has introduced S. 5632 that does offer the best protections we’ve seen to date. He is currently the Chairman of the Committee on Environmental Conservation.
The state legislature is in session now through the first week of June. However, after early May it’s next to impossible to get anything through due to tons of administrative backlog. So the actions detailed below need to happen now, otherwise we’ll have to wait until 2024!
FCC officials owned stock in Comcast, Charter, AT&T, and Verizon, watchdog says
The Federal Communications Commission should be investigated for letting employees own stock in Comcast, Charter, AT&T, and Verizon, nonprofit watchdog group Campaign Legal Center told government officials.
“Federal law specifically bans FCC employees from owning ‘any stocks, bonds, or other securities of [any company] significantly regulated by the Commission,'” the nonprofit group said last week in a letter and detailed report sent to FCC Acting Inspector General Sharon Diskin. “Despite this ban, the most recent financial disclosures publicly available show that ethics officials allowed multiple FCC employees to own stock in telecommunications and other companies that appear to fall under the prohibition.”
Wyandotte school adds 5G cellphone tower, congressional member gets involved
WYANDOTTE, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) – A T-Mobile 5G tower placed on school property in Wyandotte has stirred up controversy.
Parents and guardians were looking for answers from the superintendent of the Wyandotte City School District, but those questions weren’t answered after the meeting was abruptly canceled.
The potential effects of radiation are what parents and residents have reservations about.
During last week’s meeting, parents told CBS News Detroit, they are not against the tower, just its location outside of Washington Elementary School.
“Our position is we are not against cell towers, we just don’t want them on schools,” Josh Castmore said.
UK 5G Judicial Review: High Court Judgement
The judge has ruled in favor of the government.
Date of judgment 8 March 2023.
We note (as per the judgment):
”The government has adopted a precautionary approach in its messaging. Although it believes 5G is safe, out of an abundance of caution and on conservative principles it has suggested that those who are worried could, for example unplug the router at night, or not sleep with their mobile phone by their bed and to use their device further away from their body.”
“Finally, I observe that the individual complaints of adverse health effects may give rise to private law claims for personal injury if those concerned are able to obtain the necessary medical and scientific evidence on causation, and identify appropriate defendants. This may be a more appropriate route than a judicial review and human rights claim, but, of course, that is a matter on which the claimants should seek their own legal advice.” (Lang J)”
Six associations suspend their participation in the Radiofrequency and Health Dialogue Committee of ANSES
ANSES, speaking about the radiofrequency dialogue committee, wrote that its :
“ambition is to be a place of exchange, reflection and information on the scientific questions relating to the potential effects on health of radiofrequencies and their evaluation”.
The signatory associations believe that, contrary to the aforementioned ANSES petition of principle, this committee no longer presents the conditions for a true dialogue and no longer guarantees the scientific rigor that should prevail in risk assessment concerning public health issues related to electromagnetic fields.
In this respect, the conference organized by ANSES and WHO in Paris last November on the links between cancers and exposure to radio frequencies appeared to us to be scientifically biased. Instead of an objective assessment of the state of knowledge, we attended a biased conference. Indeed, the choice of studies presented, as well as the invited experts, whose links of interest with the cell phone industry are known, were an unequivocal reflection of this.
CHD and California Community Groups File Lawsuit Challenging Los Angeles County Over New Wireless Antenna Ordinances
The lawsuit alleges that the ordinances passed on Jan. 10 flout environmental laws, violate due process rights, and ignore safety concerns
Los Angeles, CA — Children’s Health Defense (CHD) and a coalition of community and environmental groups advocating for safe technology filed a lawsuit on Monday against Los Angeles (L.A.) County in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. The suit contends that the recently adopted amendments to Title 16 and Title 22 (the ordinances) of the L.A. County Code — which allow for the fast-tracked proliferation of wireless infrastructure — violate the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) by exempting projects under the ordinances from CEQA review. The lawsuit also asserts that the ordinances raise constitutional due process concerns in relation to wireless projects that directly impact local residents, who will suffer significant losses of personal and real property rights without the ability to contest. The plaintiffs seek a permanent injunction and petitions the court for a temporary stay and restraining order and preliminary injunction, pending resolution of the lawsuit.
The complaint points to multiple examples of what plaintiffs state violates CEQA, the California Constitution and the board’s own rule.
Chaos erupts at school board meeting over cellphone tower on top of a Wyandotte school
WYANDOTTE, MI (WXYZ) — Chaos erupted in Wyandotte Thursday because of a cell tower that’s been installed on top of Washington Elementary. On Thursday, the district held a special meeting to discuss the construction and answer questions about the potential radiation exposure the cell tower might pose to the students.
“The only thing this district did not consider is the health of our kids and our staff members,” Parent Josh Castmore said.
According to the district, Catalyst Network Services approached the school board in 2017 about the cell tower. The company, who is working with T-Mobile, said Washington Elementary was the perfect spot for a cell phone tower.
Who is entitled to interpret the risks of mobile phone radiation?
In 2022, there were four media campaigns in Germany with the message: mobile phone radiation is no health risk for children and adults. diagnose:funk proves in this ‘Brennpunkt’ (Focus) that the population was disinformed with these campaigns and reveals the tactics of manipulation.
Whether or not mobile phone radiation is harmful to health is not only the subject of a debate about the results of research. It is also a debate about product marketing, in this case the multi-billion-dollar business of a key industry. The `Brennpunkt´ on the sovereignty of interpretation of the risks of mobile phone radiation documents in five analyses how research results are manipulated for product marketing and instrumentalised for the disinformation of the population:
- the devaluation of the results of the STOA study
- the misinterpretation of the results of the of the MOBI Kids Study
- the misinterpretation of the UK-Million Women study
- the disinformation of the medical profession in the 5G article by the ICNIRP representative Prof. M. Röösli in the journal Aktuelle Kardiologie
- the tactics of industry propaganda
