On an episode of CHD.TV’s “Doctors and Scientists,” host Brian Hooker, Ph.D., interviewed Natasha Trenev, founder of Natren, Inc., about her research on gut health and the “explosion of gut problems in Western societies.”

Trenev explained how she became fascinated with gut bacteria decades ago when she noticed “many people who lived long lives had substantial amounts of fermented foods in their diet.”

Hooker and Trenev discussed today’s epidemic of chronic disease, especially in children.“Unless you fix the gut for any illness, for any problem the person has internally, you cannot make progress,” Trenev said.

“The gut is where all of the diseases manifest.” Trenev and Hooker examined the “terrain” of gut health and how the “advent of genetically modified food substances” in 1996 and the rising “abuse” of antibiotics in the U.S. have taken a toll on the health of our gut microbiome.

Hooker and Trenev also discussed the importance of taking a holistic approach when prescribing probiotics for consumption so the new bacteria are protected and delivered into a healthy environment where they can thrive — instead of being instantly killed by stomach acid and bile.

Hooker, whose son has autism, emphasized the numerous neurological conditions that “operate in the gut-brain axis,” while Trenev described the extraordinary influence diet and the microbiome have on neurological health.

“The rate of autism in the U.S. right now is 1 in 44,” Hooker said. “By 2032 it should be 1 in 2 and 80% of all males. We are in a crisis right now!”

Hooker asked Trenev what parents of a child who has a neurodevelopmental disability can do to re-establish gut health.

Trenev said she uses four different supplementation protocols and a moderately low carbohydrate diet for nutritional support for autism.

“The body, given the sufficient tools and the right mental conditioning, has the tools to heal itself,” Trenev said.
