Compliance Officer

Supervisor: Executive Director
Department: Administration

Position Description:

The compliance officer is responsible for all compliance requirements and will focus on continuous compliant improvement for internal policies and procedures, internal control design, testing and auditing, and financial risk management across all internal departments. Advises and recommends areas of program planning, business requirements management, budget execution and program coordination. Builds relationships with cross-functional teams, establishing trust, and gaining a deep understanding of relevant business drivers. This position reports to the executive director.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Evaluate/develop and implement compliance policies, procedures and controls for all related activities to prevent illegal, unethical, or improper conduct across all internal departments.
  • Monitor adherence to all internal compliance policies, procedures and controls.
  • Work closely with senior management to ensure compliance with local, state, regional, national and federal funding contracts/agreements/donations.
  • Coordinate financial reporting obligations with the director of Finance to ensure compliance with accounting policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide reports regularly to keep board of directors and senior management informed of the operation and progress of compliance efforts.
  • Research and stay familiar with non-profit organization compliance regulations and policies.
  • Develop and maintain compliance recordkeeping system, including control testing and auditing.
  • Collaborate with external auditors and HR when needed.
  • Set plans to manage a crisis or compliance violation.
  • Educate and train employees on regulations and industry practices.
  • Address employee concerns or questions on legal compliance.
  • Perform related responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications and skills:

  • BSc/BA in law, finance, business administration or a related field.
  • Professional certification (e.g., certified compliance & ethics professional) is a plus.
  • Proven experience as a compliance officer or compliance manager.
  • Experience in risk management.
  • Knowledge of legal requirements and controls (e.g., rules governing nonprofit organizations).
  • Familiarity with industry practices and professional standards.
  • Excellent communication skills, integrity, professional ethics and business acumen.
  • Ability to recognize sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be able to work independently and manage multiple tasks from a remote environment.

Staff Accountant

Supervisor: Director of Finance

Position Description:

The staff accountant will assist with the day-to-day accounting processes, ensure that financial transactions are properly recorded and the accuracy of entries to ledger accounts, reconcile subsidiary ledger accounts to the general ledger, support month-end close and perform other accounting, financial, or administrative tasks as requested by the director of finance or the financial manager.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Reconcile bank statements to the general ledger using Quickbooks (QB).
  • Scan and file checks, prepare check deposits for bank and enter deposit information into the general ledger.
  • Prepare and enter journal entries for the general ledger.
  • Maintain documentation for expenditures.
  • Register receipt, organize, code and collect funds transfer information for invoices to be paid.
  • Submit invoices to be paid to financial manager and enter payments into QB.
  • Review and approve charitable donation acknowledgment letters.
  • Reconcile intercompany accounts with CHD-Publishing and CHD-Films.
  • Assist with annual budget creation process.
  • Reconcile expense accounts and compare to budget.
  • Track 501c3(H) lobbying activities.
  • Perform other accounting, financial, or administrative tasks as requested.

Qualifications and skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • 1-3 years of accounting and/or audit experience.
  • Experience with non-profit accounting a plus.
  • Ability to recognize sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Must be able to work independently and manage multiple tasks from a remote environment.

Science Reporter/Researcher at The Defender

Director of Development

Position Overview

The director of development of Children’s Health Defense is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising strategy for the organization to advance the organization’s mission.

The director of development will report to the executive director, work closely with the president, support the board of directors, and serve as liaison with funding partners and organizations.

Primary responsibilities include:

Building Infrastructure

  • Upgrade “systems technology for fundraising” (CRM) to capture and track important fundraising data.
  • Evaluate current fundraising staffing requirements and recommend action.
  • Create a better process for cultivating new donors.

Fundraising

  • Collaborate with executive director, president, chairman and board of directors to create a development plan to support the strategic direction of the Organization and affiliates in accordance with ethical fundraising principles.
  • Manage a portfolio of CHD’s top donors and prospects and drive the strategy for all existing and potential donors, as well as oversee all stewardship practices.
  • Ensure that existing revenue streams and corresponding staff are operating at maximum efficiency and integrated into a new fundraising infrastructure.
  • Set and achieve assigned revenue goals by developing and maintaining relationships with organization partners, high-level decision-makers, and community leaders.
  • Develop, manage and evaluate timelines for all fundraising activities to ensure fundraising processes are carried out in a timely manner and fundraising goals are being achieved.
  • Help identify and develop corporate, community and individual prospects for the organization’s fundraising priorities.
  • Monitoring participant fundraising trends and implementing proven strategies to improve income.
  • Make use of the donor mailing list and customer relationship database that respects the privacy and confidentiality of donor information.
  • Prepare regular reports on fundraising progress and budgets.
  • Work with Marketing Manager and Director of Digital Communications and Technology to create the design, printing and distribution of marketing and communication materials for development efforts.
  • Manage a portfolio of top donors and prospects and increase focus on our acknowledgement program.
  • Create a direct mail program for funding.
  • Establish a planned giving program.
  • Oversee contributions to the “CHD Magazine, a year-end donor report.”
  • Initiate Prizeo events.
  • Begin a peer-to-peer fundraising program.
  • Create events for special donors.
  • Coordinate and oversee chapter/state/volunteer/donor fundraising efforts and help with events.
  • Maintain donor recognition programs. Recruit and engage volunteers for special development projects.

Financial

  • Assist with development of yearly budget.
  • Review monthly (and periodic) financial reports and provide variance notes and adjustments where warranted.
  • Work closely with the director of finance to prepare and participate in audits, 990s and other legal and financial requirements.

Governance

  • Liaison to CHD’s board of directors and the organization’s staff.

Communication

  • Collaborate with digital communications & IT manager and executive director to ensure website is an effective point of engagement for new visitors and current constituents.
  • Ensure fundraising/development content for website is current. Develop and provide copy as necessary to website administrator.

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (required)
  • Fundraising: 10 years (required).
  • Budgeting: 5 years (required).
  • Fundraising Program start up experience is a plus.
  • Foundation experience is a plus.
  • Alignment with vision and mission of the organization.
  • Success with community fundraising and the organization and management of multiple projects and programs.
  • Ability to plan and develop programs
  • Initiative and ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Suite.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
