Director of Development

Supervisor: Executive Director

Position Overview:

The Director of Development of Children’s Health Defense is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising strategy for the organization to advance the organization’s mission.

The Director of Development will report to the Executive Director, work closely with the President, support the Board of Directors, and serve as liaison with funding partners and organizations.

Primary responsibilities include:

Building Infrastructure:

  • Upgrade “systems technology for fundraising” (CRM) to capture and track important fundraising data.
  • Evaluate current fundraising staffing requirements and recommend action.
  • Create a better process for cultivating new donors.

Fundraising:

  • Collaborate with Executive Director, President, Chairman and Board of Directors to create a development plan to support the strategic direction of the Organization and affiliates in accordance with ethical fundraising principles.
  • Manage a portfolio of CHD’s top donors and prospects and drive the strategy for all existing and potential donors, as well as oversee all stewardship practices.
  • Ensure that existing revenue streams and corresponding staff are operating at maximum efficiency and integrated into a new fundraising infrastructure.
  • Set and achieve assigned revenue goals by developing and maintaining relationships with organization partners, high-level decision-makers, and community leaders.
  • Develop, manage and evaluate timelines for all fundraising activities to ensure fundraising processes are carried out in a timely manner and fundraising goals are being achieved.
  • Help identify and develop corporate, community and individual prospects for the organization’s fundraising priorities.
  • Monitoring participant fundraising trends and implementing proven strategies to improve income.
  • Make use of the donor mailing list and customer relationship database that respects the privacy and confidentiality of donor information.
  • Prepare regular reports on fundraising progress and budgets.
  • Work with Marketing Manager and Director of Digital Communications and Technology to create the design, printing and distribution of marketing and communication materials for development efforts.
  • Manage a portfolio of top donors and prospects and increase focus on our acknowledgement program.
  • Create a direct mail program for funding.
  • Establish a planned giving program.
  • Oversee contributions to the “CHD Magazine, a year-end donor report”.
  • Initiate Prizeo events.
  • Begin a Peer-to-Peer fundraising program.
  • Create events for special donors.
  • Coordinate and oversee Chapter/State/Volunteer/Donor fundraising efforts and help with events.
  • Maintain donor recognition programs. Recruit and engage volunteers for special development projects.

Financial:

  • Assist with development of yearly budget.
  • Review monthly (and periodic) financial reports and provide variance notes and adjustments where warranted.
  • Work closely with the Director of Finance to prepare and participate in audits, 990s and other legal and financial requirements.

Governance:

  • Liaison to CHD’s Board of Directors and the Organization’s staff.

Communication:

  • Collaborate with Digital Communications & IT Manager and Executive Director to ensure website is an effective point of engagement for new visitors and current constituents.
  • Ensure fundraising/development content for website is current. Develop and provide copy as necessary to website administrator.

Experience & Skills:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (required).
  • Fundraising: 10 years (required).
  • Budgeting: 5 years (required).
  • Fundraising Program start up experience is a plus.
  • Foundation experience is a plus.
  • Alignment with vision and mission of the organization.
  • Success with community fundraising and the organization and management of multiple projects and programs.
  • Ability to plan and develop programs.
  • Initiative and ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Suite.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Financial management related to development, i.e., purchasing and budgeting skills, including selection and management of outside vendors.

WordPress Developer

Supervisor: Tech Lead
Department: Tech Team
Location: Remote
Salary: $80 – $100K based on experience and skillset
Schedule: Monday-Friday during U.S. business hours
Hours: 40 hours/week

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Create custom WordPress themes and plugins.
  • Research and troubleshoot conflicts with plugins.
  • Diagnose database problems.
  • Test and evaluate new applications.
  • Conduct website performance tests.
  • Document and demonstrate solutions by developing documentation, flowcharts, layouts, diagrams, charts, code comments and clear code.
  • Improve operations by conducting systems analysis; recommending changes in policies and procedures.
  • Write well designed, testable, efficient code by using best software development practices.
  • Ensure quality assurance by testing updates and upgrades.
  • Collaborate with other developers and staff.
  • Ensure that all data is stored securely.
  • Work in both backend and frontend of sites.
  • Stay informed on new developments in WordPress.

Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge in HTML5, CSS3, SASS, GitHub, JavaScript and jQuery.
  • Experience with creating and hosting custom built secure APIs.
  • 8+ years professional experience in professional web development.
  • Experience implementing and consuming large scale web services.
  • Eagerness and willingness to learn new technologies.

Education:

  • Prefer degree in related field.


Software Developer — Full Stack Web Developer

Supervisor: Technology Lead
Department: Tech Team
Location: Remote
Salary: $80 – $100K based on experience and skillset
Schedule: Monday-Friday during US business hours
Hours: 40 hours/week

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Partnering with business stakeholders to identify technology needs to enable the business.
  • Designing, testing and implementing quality software solutions that align with the technology architecture.
  • Identifying problems with existing architectures and solutions and influencing stakeholders to resolve these issues.
  • Coordinating with third party service providers to manage the technology stack.
  • Triaging and resolving production issues.
  • Writing technical documentation that clearly and completely defines the design of current and future state technology.
  • Participating in planning discussions to define short-term and long-term roadmaps that align with both business and technology goals.

Qualifications:

Must-have:

  • 4+ years of experience with designing and implementing professional websites with a Jamstack architecture.
  • Experience developing with common tools for implementing Jamstack websites (e.g., React, Javacript, CSS, Nest.js/Gatsby/etc., Git/GitHub, Typescript).
  • Familiarity with developing and integrating with different API technologies and tooling.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Good written and oral skills to clearly communicate your ideas and influence your peers.
  • Ability to convert business requirements into a well-structured design framework that is stable, maintainable, scalable and enables future enhancement.
  • Self-motivated with a desire to learn new skills.

  • Experience with linux command line, bash scripts, and related tooling.

Senior Software Developer

Digital Services Assistant

Supervisor: Digital Communications Manager
Department: Tech Team
Location: Remote
Hourly rate: Dependent on experience and qualifications
Schedule: Monday-Friday during business hours
Hours: 40 hours/week

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

IT Support

  • Provides basic IT support to personnel within the organization on an as-needed basis, this includes helping users get started with WordPress, helping users with technical issues, etc. Includes assisting site users with issues related to CHD’s content, such as issues with receiving emails, errors with filling out forms, errors with viewing or reading content, etc. Responds to help desk tickets.

Digital Services

  • Maintain video index, archive, embeds, retrieval, and any other related tasks. Coordinate with translations coordinator for transcripts/closed captions to ensure website accessibility for all potential users. Assist tech team with various external software applications. Provide specialized assistance to CHD personnel such as page editing, organization, and correction on an as-needed basis.

Tech Team Support

  • Provide support for all tech team members on an as-needed basis. Support tasks include writing documentation on technologies currently used for CHD websites, and other everyday tasks to help the tech team work efficiently.
  • Collaborate with and assist developers and website content coordinator. Coordinate workflow and project deadlines with other digital assistants.

Minor Duties and Responsibilities:

Non-recurring assignments on an as-needed basis, such as but are not limited to:

  • Creating slide shows.
  • Creating page indexes for staff reference.
  • Quality assurance audits.

Qualifications:

Basic knowledge of WordPress and website security methods

  • Assign user roles and permissions.
  • Ensure 2FA for users.
  • Provide any necessary assistance in page creation/editing, site organization, and possess the ability to troubleshoot. 

Basic understanding of HTML and CSS

  • Apply simple styling as needed to pages and/or plugins and extensions.
  • Understand code changes put into place by other team members.
  • Use proper technical language when making reports to other team members.

Understanding of internet and research skills

  • Basic understanding of how websites work in general.
  • Understanding of how different technologies are used in conjunction with each other.
  • Have skills to learn new technologies quickly and apply them. 
  • Organize information in meaningful ways; understanding of Google Suites/Workplace tools (Google Docs, Sheets, Drives).

Customer Service, Time Management and Communication skills

  • Extensive teamwork and collaboration.
  • Active listening and written, oral and digital communication.
  • Working with many users with diverse needs, converting technical jargon into plain language.
  • Scheduling/meeting deadlines, responding to emails in a timely manner.

  • Ability to work and effectively communicate with many different staff members, chapter representatives, vendors and volunteers.

  • Graphics ability is a plus.

Experience:

  • Must have previous experience working in web development or similar technology.

Education:

  • College degree or trade certifications are helpful but not required.

Science Reporter at The Defender

Hours: Part-time + Full-time, 20 – 40 hours a week
Hourly rate: Dependent on experience and qualifications
Location: Remote

The Defender seeks passionate writers/reporters with a graduate degree in the sciences to work with The Defender’s senior science editor to develop/pitch story ideas. Reporters must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and produce content of varying depth and complexity that will engage and educate our readership.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in a scientific field.
  • Experience working as a writer or editor (writing sample will be required for consideration).
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills with a strong knowledge of AP Stylebook.
  • Experience using G Suite.
  • Ability to prioritize.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Hard-working and excellent team player.
  • Deep sense of integrity and commitment to accuracy.
