Melbourne father of two Chris Nemeth has reportedly received what multiple media outlets describe as Australia’s largest individual COVID-19 vaccine injury compensation award to date, highlighting both the rare occurrence of serious vaccine-related injuries and ongoing concerns over the country’s compensation process.
Nemeth developed chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), a rare autoimmune neurological disorder affecting the peripheral nerves, following his first AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in July 2021.
According to Australian media reports, his condition was accepted under the federal COVID-19 Vaccine Claims Scheme, requiring years of medical evaluations and extensive documentation before compensation was offered.
Nemeth has previously described relearning how to walk after the illness and now requires ongoing immunoglobulin infusions.
Journalist Aisling O’Loughlin recently reported that Nemeth’s settlement totaled approximately 6.5 million Australian dollars ($4.5 million), describing it as the largest known individual payout under Australia’s COVID-19 Vaccine Claims Scheme.
However, neither Services Australia nor the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing has publicly confirmed the reported settlement amount.
Australia established its no-fault COVID-19 Vaccine Claims Scheme in 2021 to compensate individuals who experienced serious adverse events considered likely linked to COVID-19 vaccination.
The program closed to new applications in September 2024 but continues processing existing claims. According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), nearly 5,000 claims were lodged, with approximately 560 resulting in compensation totaling more than AU$40 million ($28 million), while hundreds of claims remain unresolved.
Nemeth’s case has become emblematic of broader criticism surrounding the compensation program. ABC investigations have documented claimants describing lengthy delays, complex administrative requirements and significant financial and emotional hardship while awaiting decisions.
Australian officials have acknowledged the need to evaluate lessons learned from the COVID-19-era program as they consider a broader permanent no-fault vaccine compensation framework.
While public health authorities continue to conclude that serious adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination remain rare and that vaccination delivered substantial public health benefits during the pandemic, Nemeth’s case underscores the importance of maintaining transparent, efficient and credible compensation systems for the small number of individuals whose injuries are determined to be vaccine-related.
