Arthur Allen article investigates possible injury caused to children by thimerosal, mercury-containing preservative that is used in vaccines; Johns Hopkins pediatrician and scholar Neal Halsey, who served on several influential committees that decide which inoculations will be given to children, is confronting doubts about safety of vaccines and has become unlikely hero to some parents’ groups that contend vaccinations have caused autism and other disorders.
