These include vaccines that most other American adults will never encounter, including shots for rabies, typhoid—and anthrax. Rollout of the mandatory anthrax vaccine among many more U.S. military personnel beginning in the late 1990s and service members have been contending with anthrax-vaccine-induced illness ever since. A GAO survey found that, in order to avoid the anthrax shots, more than one in six respondents reported transferring to other units, changing their status to inactive or leaving the military altogether. Of those who left or transferred, one in four cited the anthrax vaccine as the primary reason for their decision. Top air force leaders have just announced that there is a severe shortage of pilots begging the question of whether mandatory vaccine policies and issues of vaccine safety need to be revisited.
